Welcome to Veenhuizen, the Netherlands. Veenhuizen is a small Dutch village, situated in the north of the country. Over the past two decades dramatic changes have taken place in the community. The village, which served as a colony for the re-education of homeless people and children, has radically changed over time to become an outstanding tourist destination. The town is surrounded by forests and valleys and offers cultural and architectural delights. Tourism authorities and policy makers in the Netherlands place a high priority on the environment. The regeneration of Veenhuizen is a perfect example of this in practice. Local buildings with a history as housing for prisoners were transformed to a tourist destination. The national prison museum recently received their 1 mln visitor. Another building Maallust, once a mill and storage, is nowadays a brewery and a chees farm. The former hospital is a hotel and health centre.Veenhuizen is included on the tentative list of UNESCO worldheritage.
