The EDEN Network

The overarching goal of the EDEN project is to foster the exchange of best practices at the European level and facilitate networking among award-winning destinations. By doing so, the aim is to inspire and encourage other destinations to embrace sustainable tourism development models. Participating countries have been invited by the European Commission to collaborate on an Action Plan for the Network of EDEN destinations, outlining strategic objectives and providing a roadmap for future actions.

In 2008, during the European Tourism Day, the 30 winning destinations from the first two editions of the EDEN Awards signed a memorandum of understanding in Brussels, officially establishing the EDEN Network. This landmark event, known as the "Declaration on a European Network of Destinations of Excellence for Sustainable Tourism," solidified a commitment to collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and information exchange among the EDEN destinations. Over the course of three years, a dynamic network was formed, and in 2011, a mission statement and strategy were adopted, setting the foundation for a long-term action plan. To further strengthen the network, the EDEN Network Association was established in January 2012. Since June 2012, membership has been extended to include the runners-up of the EDEN Awards, allowing for a broader representation of destinations while upholding the stringent criteria of sustainability.
